Most natural UV light is generated by the sun with about ten percent of sunlight being UV and only about three to four percent penetrating the atmosphere to reach the ground. Of the UV radiation that reaches the earth, 95 percent is UVA and five percent is UVB.

No measurable UVC from the sun reaches the earth’s surface. Because of the spectral sensitivity of DNA, only the UVC region demonstrates significant germicidal properties.

WHAT IS UV-C LIGHT?

CAN UV-C LIGHT STOP THE SPREAD OF COVID-19?

THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION TODAY

The simple is answer is: YES!

A recent study done by the University of Boston alongside Signify, a leading innovator in lighting technology, has proven that UV-C light can inactive the COVID-19 virus. The experiment demonstrates that UV-C light produced by low-pressure mercury lamps at 253.7nm can eliminate COVID-19 once a certain dose has been reached. It is also worth noting that UV-C light inactivates at least 2 other coronaviruses that are near relative of COVID-19 (SARS-COV-1 and MERS-COV).

Eric Rondolat, CEO of Signify, outlines the lighting company's work with Boston University on the development of UV light as a preventative measure against the coronavirus COVID-19.

HOW DO I SELECT THE CORRECT UV-C DEVICE?

eada1a790cc37d7b5b71588be4f1f5.jpg

NANOMETERS

The wavelength of the light is of the upmost importance when deciding on a germicidal UV-C light. If the light is not within the correct wavelength (200-280 nm) then it will not be able to inactive pathogens effectively. According to a study done by Philips lighting, UV-C light within the specific range of 254-270 nm are the most germicidal in the application of disinfecting. Any UV-C lights outside of that range will require longer periods of time for disinfection, delaying the germicidal efficiency of the light.

INTENSITY

The intensity of a UV-C light can be defined by how much UV-C light is emitted from a source. This is typically measured in microwatts (µW).

Since we are interested in disinfecting both air and surfaces, it is also equally important to consider the amount of UV-C received at different distances from the source. The amount of UV-C light received at a specific distance can be measured in milijoules per cm² (mJ/cm²).  It is imperative to understand these metrics when comparing different UV-C devices in order to decide which product is more effective. It is also a huge red-flag when a company offering UV-C products fail to mention this information using the correct metrics.

In relation to our products its intensity is .34 mJ/cm2 at 5 ft.

CHEMICAL CLEANERS v.s. UV-C LIGHT

CHEMICAL

  • There have been no reports to date that confirm any chemical cleaner's ability to effectively disinfect the COVID-19 virus.

  • Unable to sterilize air.

  • Time and labor intensive while still being ineffective against certain viruses if not used properly.

  • Bacteria can form immunity to certain antimicrobial agents and disinfectants.

  • Exposure to chemical ingredients many be harmful to human health, causing irritations and allergic reactions while over time causing cancer in some cases.

UV-C LIGHT

  • Extremely effective form of disinfection and proven to eliminate COVID-19

  • Able to disinfect both surface and air

  • Extensive studies demonstrating UV-C light can disinfect a variety of microbes, the majority in matter of seconds and without the threat of pathogens building immunity.

  • Non-toxic and chemical free

  • Safe when used properly

IS UV-C LIGHT SAFE TO USE?

Prolonged, direct exposure to UV-C light can cause temporary erythema (reddening of the skin) and conjunctivitis (inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eye; eye irritation), but does not cause skin cancer or cataracts. If you are exposed to direct germicidal light, it can burn the top surface of your skin but fortunately the majority of UV-C light is absorbed by the dead skin layered on our bodies. If your eyes are exposed, it would be similar to a "welder's flash", and your eyes can feel dry or gritty. At no time do germicidal lamps cause any permanent damage. It is also worth noting that UV-C light is absorbed entirely by the air and objects within a room. For example, if you are looking at UV-C light through a glass window, you will not be affected by the radiation as it is absorbed completely by the glass properties.

Nonetheless, it is wise to avoid exposing your body to direct UV-C light.
